Auran Empire Sourcebook

I just recently received ACKS and the Players Companion for Christmas, so I'm new here on the forums. I was wondering when the Auran Empire book would start it's kick start, or if it's already over? Also, when will the source book be available for purchase? Sorry, if there is already a thread with this information.

Thanks for your interest!

The Auran Empire sourcebook will kickstart next year. We have a policy of not kickstarting a project until the prior kickstarter has shipped. Right now we have to finish Domains at War's kickstarter.

Does that mean Auran Empire will Kickstart before Lairs & Encounters?

It's not clear that L&E will Kickstart. We may just publish it as an e-book.

To be honest, we're rather conflicted about it! We don't want to continuously ask our fans for Kickstarter crowdfunding, but we also can't hard-publish without it.

I need to make a Business Strategy proficiency throw, clearly... Fortunately I have three ra--is that a natural 1?

DAAAAAAMN YOU, MACRIS!

On another note, I'd back a Lairs & Encounters Kickstarter in a heartbeat as, of the two, it sounds like it'll be of far more use to me.

Don't get me wrong, I expect you'll be seeing my hard-earned (not really) coin on an Auran Empire Kickstarter, too.

Have you thought of concocting a poll about whether or not there would be a lack of interest in another Kickstarter? I have some trouble believing that, myself, as Kickstarter doesn't really carry the same kind of "oh, so you don't have the money?" stigma it might have once had. I've seen several Kickstarter campaigns from a single company each do successively better than the last.

I will also declare myself more interested in lairs & encounters. nothing against the auran empire, it's just that I'm already running a game not in that setting, so reading about it now doesn't do me as much good.

Thanks for the feedback, gentlemen. Auran Empire would be a very expensive product due to all the maps and artwork so it's a necessity to Kickstart.

You are doubtless right that attitudes towards Kickstarter are changing.

Kickstarter's a funny beast these days. It does seem the most successful kickstarters rely on the reputation the producer has generated from successful delivery of previous kickstarters, but that such successful producers have a tendency to get bogged down in stretch goals, which ultimately slows product release a lot.

I would probably back either or both of L&E and AE, though. I expect L&E would provide me with more useful automation-fodder, though... :P

Between L&E and Auran Empire I'm more interested in Auran Empire. Unless I'm missing something special (Lord knows that's possible) about L&E I think I've got enough sources for monsters and small monsters.

Settings to either run a campaign in, or steal mercilessly from are of more use to me.

I would participate in kickstarter for both products, now that I've discovered Autarch. Is there any maps of the Auran Empire, Jutland, Kemish, and the other nations. posted anywhere?

The only published map is that of the continent of Aurepos, roughly paralleling our own Mediterranean.

So...I just got the email with the final pdf for Domains. Dwimmermount is also finished (ish?). By my count that means all your kickstarters are done.

When can we expect Auran Empire to Kickstart? <grin>

Personally I'm a little more excited for L&E than the auran empire setting, but judging by the thread about thief skills and powerful spells, it seems like Alex is riffing on heroic ACKs the hardest. Such is the purview of the independent designer, though, he gets to work on what he finds most interesting :-)

Oh, I've been working on Lairs & Encounters, too! Don't worry. Everything is proceeding according to plan*.

*With the exception of James Malizeswki's departure, Tavis Allison's twins, 2 year delay on Dwimmermount, 9 month delay on Domains at War, achievement of Guns of War bonus goal, and arrival of D&D 5th Edition.

"achievement of Guns of War bonus goal"

Wait, what?

Alex

As a late bonus goal to Domains at War, we wooed Lamentations of the Flame Princess players by offering to write a separate supplement called Guns of War, with rules for gunpowder. It funded, so I had to write it.

Sadly my knowledge of the Early Modern Era is not as robust as my knowledge of the Ancient and Medieval Eras, so it's been a toughie.

Have a look at the Renaissance RPG (a BRP derivative) which might give you some ideas. Also, Pete Cakebread and Ken Walton (the authors) are top draw gentlemen who I'm sure would be more than willing to help.

My go-to references for early gunpowder are Weapons and Warfare in Renaissance Europe, by Bert Hall, and the National Park Service's Artillery Through the Ages (available at http://www.cr.nps.gov/history/online_books/source/is3/is3toc.htm).

I'll definitely be looking forward to GoW as a supplement for D@W. I don't think I personally would want my campaign to go past very early matchlocks and wheellocks, but I'm sure others will be interested in further developments, since flintlocks and cap-and-ball would both be useful for westerns or steampunk games.

Thank you both for the recommendations on the sources!

The rules will cover matchlock, wheellock, and flintlocks. They are being designed to be backwards compatible with Lamentations of the Flame Princess' gunpowder rules. I'm 90% done; but still finalizing artillery.

So, its almost next year. What's the update on Kickstarting Auran Empire? Will you include a draft for immediate consumption of backers? (Based on your good example with Dwimmermount I'm leaning towards a personal policy of not backing any gaming project that doesn't give backers access to drafts.)

Alex

All future Kickstarters will occur AFTER draft completion.

As such we are not ready to do an Auran Empire kickstarter. We do have several other products that are nearing readiness. These include:

Sinister Stone of Sakkara
Lairs & Encounters
Guns of War
Barbarian Conqueror King
Heroic Companion

BCK is developed by Omer Joel. It's a campaign supplement for a post-apoc barbarian planetary romance fantasy. Barbarians riding dinosaurs confront spaceships.

Sounds like one can run a Thundarr the Barbarian campaign with it. I'll look forward to seeing more about it.

I would say Thundarr is probably one of Omer's biggest inspirations, though he really is better suited to confirm that than I.

I imagine finalizing the Auran Empire sourcebook will be a significant effort. There's plenty of other areas that I'm sure would be able to occupy Autarch for the next couple years. However, I wonder if a different approach might be considered. Perhaps a Gazeteer per province/region would be a more fruitful approach. One would have to have the discipline to not try to make each new gazetteer more 'awesome to the extreme' than the last, but I think Alex has that discipline. Another consideration with the gazetteer approach is that it may turn out that some provinces just may not be interesting enough to justify the effort for it to have its own gazetteer. Perhaps such provinces could be viewed as reserved for each individual GM to flesh out on his own.

This raises an interesting question. Which areas of the Auran Empire would people be most interested in playing in?

Well, since you ask... Kemesh. Definitely Kemesh. My players have encountered a magic portal to that desert land because my campaign's backstory involves [SPOILER OMITTED IN CASE MY PLAYERS READ THIS], and it'd be handy to have a resource to draw region-appropriate locations and cultural details from.

I also think Kemesh would be interesting as well as the territories that border Kemesh. With the leaders of the Auran and Somirean Empires seeming defeated both Somirea and Opelenea could be ripe for trouble-making by emigres from Kemesh or Syksostan.

Rorn.  I ran a roughly reskinned Karameikos campaign there several years ago.  Would be interested in seeing the "book" Rorn.

Thanks! Good feedback.

Kemesh would have a feel very akin to the world of Conan's Stygia, Zamora, and Ophir. I could see it being very fun, although the domain-level play is largely "evil" in Kemesh. Opelenea is more neutral and so it might be better - it's still exotic but less chaotic.

Rorn would have a feel akin to Dark Ages Briton after the death of King Arthur. The ersatz Saxons and Danes are pressing in (from Jutland) and the Roman Empire (Aura) has abandoned the region. A high king briefly unified everyone but now it's back to squabbling. There is huge potential for domain play here, but it's much more "vanilla".
