Invisibility with Hijinks/Magic Items

Hey, just a couple of questions with regards to Invisibility (and by extension, Inaudibility). Firstly is with regards to Hijinks. Looking through the forums, Alex seemed to answer this question before, but for the life of me I have no idea what the hell he means ><.

Secondly is more a confirmation that you *can* use magic items (are scrolls included in this?) which Invisible and it doesn't void the invisbility (assuming you don't use the item as an attack)?

You didn't actually ask your first question. What was it?

Woops :D. The question was, how does Invisibility affect Hijinks? What bonuses does it give you?

He did, invisibly!

...I'll show myself out.

IANAA, and this hasn't come up in play, but I can actually make an argument for Invisibility not having a direct effect.  Yes, mechanically you're making a single die roll using your Move Silently or Hide in Shadows numbers, but really that's just abstracting out a month's worth of activities, hustle, preparation, multiple skill checks of multiple kinds...  A flat bonus to a single die roll seems like too much of a shortcut.

The counterargument would be, of course being invisible helps you spy on people, what the hell, Dave?  I can see that side of it too.

I think what I'd like is something finer grained than a flat plus to the hijink roll, which everyone will be after from there on out.  Maybe a +2, or +1d4, to your hijink throw, but since being invisible suggests deliberation rather than wandering somewhere you shouldn't, an equal penalty to the Crime and Punishment roll if you're caught after all.  Maybe even a +1 to that d6 roll to determine charges, by the same logic.

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing... Maybe invisibility (and other effects that could plausibly provide some kind of benefit) should only provide a bonus if they can be reliably re-used throughout the full month?

Unfortunately, since invisibility lasts up to 24 hours, this doesn’t help much in most situations.

A nightblade who can cast it once per day can be invisible the whole month; so can anyone with a ring of invisibility. All it really does is prevent charged or consumable magic items from offering whatever benefit it offers, it doesn’t really answer the question of what the benefit should be.

my gut ruling would be: invisibility causes you to automatically succeed on a hide in shadows roll. if the degree of success matters, you can roll either take the result or the minimum roll to count as a success.  This is only if you can bestow yourself with invisibility every day for a month, so either nightblades with invisibility or anyone with a ring of invisibility. I guess you could also hire a mage to cast it on you every day.

I think I’d agree with you for the general case of hide in shadows. But specifically for a hijink, I think I’d be more likely to give a +8 bonus like chameleon.

For two reasons; one, hijinks offer enough broken income, we don’t need to make it even higher :stuck_out_tongue: And two, I feel like for a hijink, the Hide in Shadows roll is an abstracted ‘don’t get caught’ roll that includes some moving silently and such, and that it would still be possible to fail while invisible.

(I’m not sure if +8 is too good, either. I’d want to look at a spreadsheet before making a final decision, honestly. If you can make a profit by hiring a mage to cast it every day for a month, it’s definitely much too good, in my opinion.)
