Monthly Hijink Income table

I glanced at the Monthly Hijink Income table on Page 141 of the ACKS Core Book, and, knowing that Alex has calculated everything to make sense in this game, can't understand why the incomes seem so low. For example, a Level 1 thief is considered to earn 5gp. But a Level 1 thief who chooses to Carouse in a month would make approximately 90gp from a success, and succeed about 70% of the time, leading to an expected income of 63gp per month on average (not accounting for failures that put you through the courts and fine them (or worse) which I'm sure is part of the maths, but doesn't seem like it should be enough to turn 63gp into 5gp. I can see that higher level thieves start to become profitable relative to their hiring fees, and accept that lower level thieves may not be profitable while they're still learning their trade, but I can't understand how 63gp from rolling the action turns into 5gp as an average.

What assumptions am I missing?

A 1st level thief succeeds 35% of the time, not 70% of the time, at carousing.

The expected return on carousing is 6.5 x 3 x 5gp = 97.5gp x 35% = 34.125gp.

The cost of hiring a 1st level thief for one month = 25gp.

The expected loss from lawyers and fines = 3.45gp.

34.125gp - 25gp - 3.45gp = 5.675gp.

I think I then rounded to 5gp.

Whoops, got my probabilities backwards.

Thanks for the response, Alex. If you’ll forgive my pedantry, am I correct in understanding the table is hiking PROFITS rather than income? That is, if I’m using the table, don’t pay my hirelings first…

Correct, it's profits. You don't have to worry about salary.
